The Impact of the Internet on Contemporary Literature
Literature is basically everything that has ever been written. Everything from Homer’s earliest poems to today’s web pages can be considered literature. But there are different types of literature for a certain sense. Literature may be written in a particular language, such as English literature, or it may be written in a particular culture, such as African literature. But literature really means more than printed words, and the Internet is certainly a part of literature. I should mention that the word literature comes from the French phrase belles-lettres, which means “beautiful writing”. When a work is called literature, it is usually considered a great work of art. Online literature does not necessarily have to be like that due to the fact that no one controls online literature. In the next essay, I will talk about the influence of the Internet on today’s literature.
There are two main categories of literature that are also present on the Internet: fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is writing that the author creates from his imagination. Authors may include personal experience or facts about real people or events, but they combine these facts with imagined situations (Moran, 45). In non-Internet literature, the project undergoes at least some kind of censorship in terms of the words that can be used, but the Internet allows authors to put whatever they want on a website and enjoy it. Most fiction is narrative writing, such as novels and short stories. Fiction also includes drama and poetry. Nonfiction is writing facts about real-life situations. The main forms of nonfiction include essay, biography, autobiography, and diary (Browner, 90). The Internet represents new forms – Internet pages, that is, Internet books.
People read literature for various reasons. The most common reason for reading is pleasure. People read to pass the time, or for information and knowledge. Through literature, people meet characters with whom they can identify, and sometimes find solutions to their own problems. With literature, a person can often understand situations that they would otherwise not be able to understand in real life (Koehler, 28). Often just putting words together can be enjoyable, just as a child likes the sound of “Ring Around the Rosie,” even though he may not understand what the words mean. There are four elements of literature: characters, plot, theme, and style. A good author has the ability to balance these elements, creating a unique work of art. Characters are central to the interest of many plays and novels, as well as biographies and autobiographies. The writer must know each character well and have a clear idea of the appearance, speech and thoughts of each of them. Internet literature is not difficult to create because, unlike “traditional” literature, Internet literature requires minimal initial costs (Moran, 47). And since reading usually involves practicality, at some point one wouldn’t be surprised to see portable electronic devices that could download books from the Internet and present them in digital format.
Motivation is the reason for the actions of the characters. A good writer will make sure that the character’s motives are clear and logical. Internet writers do not have to be like that, they are not controlled and hardly risk anything by publishing on the Internet. The setting is where the character’s story takes place. The plot is built around a series of events that take place in a certain period of time. This is what happens to the characters. There are no rules for the order of presentation of events. A unique plot has a beginning, middle and end. In literary terms, a unitary plot includes exposition, a rising action, a climax, and a denouement or outcome. Exposition provides the background and situation of the story (Browner, 93). The rising plot builds on the exposition. It creates suspense, that is, the reader’s desire to find out what happens next. The climax is the highest point of interest, at the same time the turning point of the story. The denouement is the conclusion. A theme is the basic thought expressed by a literary work. It develops from the interplay of character and action. A theme may contain a moral, to warn the reader to lead a better life or a different kind of life. Internet literature doesn’t have to be like that at all because no one controls it. Writing takes minimal risk in terms of investment, but it is possible to find readers from all over the world who can pay for an e-book and download it to their own computers, which is very high (Moran, 49).
A serious writer strives to make his work a sincere expression of feeling or genuine emotion. They avoid sentimentality, which means giving too much emphasis to emotions or pretending to feel emotions. A writer of honest emotions does not need to tell the reader what to think about the story. A good story will lead the reader to the author’s conclusion. Style is the way a writer uses words to create literature. It is difficult to enjoy the characters or plot of a story without enjoying the author’s style (Browner, 98). An author’s style is just as important as what he is trying to say. Point of view, or the way the story is presented, is another part of style. A writer can tell a story in the first person, using the pronoun I, as if the narrator were the main or secondary character in it. Or, the writer may use the third-person method, in which the narrator separates himself from the characters and describes the action using pronouns such as he and she. There are two types of third person view: limited and omniscient. In third-person limited point of view, the narrator describes events as seen by one character. In third-person omniscient or omniscient point of view, the narrator reports on what several characters are thinking and feeling. Reading is a very personal art. There are no definitive rules for evaluating written work. Often people’s judgment of a work can change as tastes and fashions change. Yet the classics continue to spark readers’ imaginations and provide timeless advice. Shakespeare will most likely be as popular in a hundred years as he is today. That is the power of literature. Literature is timeless (Moran, 53).
It should be noted that literature can have many and different values for a person, and the Internet is the one that enables literary values to be handed over to the audience without any obstacles. It all depends on the story and the value or moral issue the author wants you, the reader, to draw from it. The value that literature had for me was actually difficult to describe in words. But to understand the value of literature, you need to know the definition of value and literature. Value has many meanings, but there are two that are related (Browner, 102). Valuable in utility or importance to the possessor and a principle, standard, or quality considered valuable or desirable. Literature is a collection of writings in prose or verse. Literature produces value because it is fundamentally an analysis of an experience or situation (Koehler, 30). I got a different value from each story. With The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, it showed me that one does not have to be civilized or conform to society’s ideas to become cultured or mature. With Huck Finn, he ran away from everything that was considered civilized (Moran, 58). He had nothing and really wanted nothing. But at the same time he experienced and matured by living dangerously. Because of this, I appreciated Huck’s adventure and embraced it as my own. Huck proves his maturity when he comments on the king and duke fooling the villagers into believing they are the dead man’s brothers, and Huck says, “I never saw anything so disgusting.” (Twain 163) Even though the king and the duke have committed a terrible act to the villagers, they still feel sorry for them when they are tarred. Huck comments, “Human beings can be terribly cruel to each other.” (Twain 225) William Faulkner’s Barn Burning tells of a man named Abner Snopes who burned barns when he was upset or angry. This was his way of getting back at them. “Barn Burning” has two very obvious struggles (Browner, 105). Abner oppresses his family just as the upper class oppressed him. To me, “Barn Burning” is based on misdirected anger. What is actually happening these days. For example, a teenager and his parents get away with it, he leaves and now his anger is directed at everything in his path. “Barn Burning” has value because it shows in life that people actually misdirect their anger. Such as the school shootings and bomb threats that have occurred in the past few years (Koehler, 33). Just as Abner Snopes felt like an outsider in the upper class, so did the students who committed these violent acts. In “The Swimmer” it made me appreciate life and what it brings. Because if you’re not careful or paying attention, it will pass you by without notice (Browner, 109). As with “Everyday Use,” one of the daughters didn’t appreciate who she was or who she was as she went out looking for her history. Which she already had at her fingertips.
Finally, I would like to note that reading all the literature that colleges and universities assign to their students involves a very high cost to society in terms of paper consumption and wasted time (which includes going to the library, or bookstore, etc.). The Internet and the ability to download books from the Internet to a single portable device would reduce costs, save trees, and make people more efficient. I realize that there are many things that we as humans in this society take for granted. Literature has made me appreciate many past experiences and situations and I enjoy holding a paper book in the evening preparing for the next day, but I am not opposed to the use of digital technology to create digital books that would contribute not only to efficiency but also to cost reduction for the whole society .
