Successful Abstracts Students Should Know

An abstract is a summary of the thesis that is very short, in other words the presentation or illustration should be accurate, precise and clear, but complete. It allows readers to get to know a short summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference proceedings or any in-depth analysis of a particular topic. It is used to help readers quickly determine the purpose of a paper and serves as an entry point for any academic paper and is always found at the beginning.

Abstracts aim to compile a body of literature on that particular topic, although the terms precis or synopsis are often used to refer to the same thing, but in business or management reports, an executive summary is usually used, which contains more information than an executive summary.

There are typically four elements to a good, academic abstract relevant to the completed paper:

(1) research focus (ie, a statement of the problem/research questions we are dealing with);

(2) research methods used (experimental research, case studies, questionnaires, etc.);

(3) research results/findings;

(4) main conclusions and recommendations, i

(5) key word(s) aimed at informing the field of research or concepts as the basis of thinking necessary for scientific informatization.

The abstract is written on a separate page in the form of a paragraph using Times New Romans 12 single space, and keywords should be placed alphabetically before the first chapter of the thesis, and its length usually varies according to the discipline and university requirements. Some contain from 200 to 500 words, but very rarely more than one page. It may or may not have an abstract section heading explicitly stated as a precursor to the content, but it is usually divided logically as an overview of what appears in the paper, with any of the following subheadings: background, introduction, objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. There are two types of abstracts: structured abstracts and unstructured abstracts. Structured abstracts contain explicitly stated subheadings, while unstructured abstracts consist of only one paragraph without explicit subheadings. Abstracts can be informative and descriptive. Informative abstracts are known as full abstracts which are a collective summary of the content of the paper including its background, purpose, methodology, results and conclusion. It is usually between 100 and 200 words, while descriptive abstracts summarize the structure of the paper, its main themes and key points. Descriptive abstracts are also known as limited abstracts or indicative abstracts that describe what the paper covers without going into its substance.

In conclusion, the summary briefly summarizes the thesis or synopsis so that the readers can understand what is in the scientific thesis by reading the summary, therefore the summary should be clearly, briefly, accurately and easily presented, which consists of four elements, i.e. logical arguments worthy of research, approaches used to solve problems (methods), the obtained results as well as the derived conclusion.
